“I’ve learned that HospiceCare is not about giving up. I’m finally able to flourish spiritually, artistically and mentally. I’ve never been more alive.” —Steve Severson, HospiceCare patient

Steve Severson came to HospiceCare when he was 40 years old. Out of the natural order of things, he was dying of a brain tumor—a condition that had him swinging between belief in a miracle cure and anger at his condition. For the past four years, his twin brother Rob was there for Steve every step of the way. Each brother was more concerned about the other. Inseparable as kids, they were inseparable still, even when Steve’s anger overflowed in Rob’s direction. “Rob just kept coming, and kept being there for Steve and supporting him,” said RN Jodie Henning.
Rob knew that Steve was a gentle soul at heart, and encouraged him to enjoy what he had. “Steve was always given the opportunity to do things for himself at HospiceCare. He was in charge,” said Rob. He and the staff both encouraged Steve’s talents as an artist and musician, and his creativity took off, culminating in an art show of his work. “He did more living in his time at HospiceCare than in the prior four years,” admitted Rob, “and that’s because the staff were able to understand who he was and what he needed.” Just as important, the staff understood the two needed to be brothers, inseparable to the last moment.
What a comfort it is when the people who are caring for our loved ones understand them and know what they need. Rob Severson said it best:
“If you care about somebody who is dying, you want them in a situation where they’re comfortable and can live their life as fully as possible.”
Your gifts help us provide high quality care to everyone in our community who needs hospice services—care that enables them to live life as fully as they can for whatever time they have.
Thank you for giving.
