Marcia Whittington Returns to HospiceCare as Vice President of the Foundation
Marcia Whittington, who has led Gilda’s Club Madison for two years as chief executive officer, will leave in September to head the HospiceCare Foundation. Whittington was formerly the vice president of the HospiceCare Foundation from 2002 to 2007, when she left to pursue the opportunity at Gilda’s Club.
“I am excited to be returning to HospiceCare and to be a part of this superb organization. The mission of HospiceCare is one I strongly believe in and I am honored to lead the Foundation once again and offer donor development and strengthen HospiceCare’s presence within the community,” said Whittington.
HospiceCare is now serving more than 50 percent of all deaths in Dane County and 30 percent in Rock County. The nonprofit has consistently grown at a rate of 20 percent for the past seven years and nearly 30 percent in 2008. Now serving more than 600 patients per day and 10,000 grief clients per year, HospiceCare is one of the largest healthcare organizations in south central Wisconsin with more than 500 employees and 1,100 volunteers. Due to growth in staff and patients served, the local nonprofit was recently listed in Inc. Magazine’s list of America’s 5000 fastest growing companies for the third straight year.
“Donors in this community continue to stand behind and invest in HospiceCare. Considering the current state of the economy and the increase in our charity-care patient numbers, the community deserves a strong leader to protect and grow their investment,” said Susan Phillips, president and chief executive officer of HospiceCare Inc. “Our donors, board of directors and I are pleased that Marcia is returning to HospiceCare as VP of the Foundation. The VP of the Foundation role demands a strong and visionary leader who knows our community and the business of hospice. Marcia combines these qualities with warmth and tact.”
Many services HospiceCare provides, including grief support, community education, clinical education and volunteer training, are not reimbursed by Medicare, Medicaid or private insurance companies. Donations to HospiceCare defray costs for these services as well as patient-care services provided to uninsured or underinsured patients. As HospiceCare’s patient numbers grow, so does the size of the programs that are not reimbursed.
Over the past 16 years, Whittington’s career has focused on the areas of development, fundraising and leadership in the Madison community. This includes her most recent role as CEO of Gilda’s Club Madison, serving for five years as the vice president of the HospiceCare Foundation, and working as the development director for Meriter Health Services Foundation. She began her nonprofit experience working with the University of Wisconsin Foundation.
Marcia led the completion of Gilda’s Club’s $4.1 million fundraising campaign and the opening of Gilda’s Club Madison last summer. Her experience also includes leadership in the successful $20 million capital campaign to build the Ellen & Peter Johnson HospiceCare Residence, along with overseeing all annual giving, major gifts and planned giving.
